The Power of the King of Football

Sports have never failed to fascinate human beings with their special magic. Sometimes, they can stimulate people who love sports to achieve their potential. Pelé, one of the most famous football players in the world, is a good example. Born in a poor family in a small village, Pelé attended his first World Cup when he was 17. Pelé was injured badly in the third World Cup he played, and it was suspected that he couldn’t play in another World Cup. However, he was back and helped Brazil be the champion of the world for the third time of his life, and was called “the King of Football”. What’s the power supporting him? In my opinion, it was the power of dream and persistence.

Pelé’s father was a professional footballer who was injured badly and never made much money. But Pelé loved playing football and has got his own dream — to be a footballer like his father. Under the guidance of his dream, he played football in the streets even when he had to do a lot of jobs to help his family. Then, at the age of 15, he got the first chance to make his dream come true in his life. He was given a trial by a big football club, Santos. He proved how talented and hard-working he was, so Santos took him on. Pelé made it. It was the power of dream that made him go on the path leading to a successful footballer and changed his destiny.

As we all know, Pelé was chosen to play for his country then. But in the 1958 World Cup, he didn’t play until the 3rd game for his knee injury. In spite of this, with his help, Brazil won and they became the champions of the world. However, he was injured in the next two World Cups. In the 1966 World Cup, Brazil lost. At that moment, there were two ways in front of Pelé, giving up the World Cup and living with the fame he had got, or trying his best to play the fourth World Cup. At first, he refused to play in World Cup again. But he changed his mind and wanted to show the people doubting him that they were wrong. He chose to carry on with the magic of football and played in the World Cup in Mexico. As we know, Brazil won the World Cup again. Undoubtedly, the power of persistence in his mind is the most important factor that gave Pelé the courage to once again stand on the stage of World Cup.

“He was born for soccer,” a fan said, “just like Beethoven was born for music.” Pelé was successful at last due to the power of his dream and persistence. Hold on to your dream and persist in your mind, and you will make it in the end. That’s what we can learn from our King of Football, Pelé.
